We all knew DJT was a know-nothing reality TV host. We all knew he is uncouth and a boor and vulgar. His opinions and hunches and guesses about governing and policy and science and reality all come from "his gut," not any reading or careful research. This is a man who watches 8 hours of trash TV per day and absorbs it all uncritically. He cannot conceive that experts might be better-informed than him, and will not suffer any dissenting opinions in his presence. In short, this is a president that tries to rule the US the same way he ruled his businesses: by force of personality and bullying.Unfortunately, when he bankrupts this latest venture of his, he won't be able to declare Chapter 11 and walk away scot-free.Benen's book is a long litany -- and I suspect it could have been much longer -- of instances where DJT literally didn't know what he was doing.I have a couple complaints about this. One, Benen writes as though DJT is making these wild policy decisions on his own, when it is obvious to any observer that he, like W before him, is merely carrying out orders from above, with "above" being The American Heritage Foundation, The Cato Institute, and Americans for Prosperity. And let's not forget Roger Stone! Trump hasn't got the processing power to make decisions like this on his own. He is literally Stone's marionette.Second, Benen keeps referring to DJT as "the Republican." Up until 1987 Trump was a registered Democrat, and was again 2001-2009. Between 1999 and 2001 he was a registered Reform Party voter. Like everything else in his life, his political party affiliation is merely a convenience to get whatever benefits he thinks he can get for himself.The book is well researched and exhaustive, but it's also exhausting and repetitive. We all knew DJT was a con man when we hired him.What's more substantive in this book is Benen's explanation of the current Republican Party. As "the party of no," they remade themselves, under Mitch McConnell's so-called "leadership," into the Opposition Party, whose only platform was to be against anything Obama was for. They even opposed the GOP's own legislation, if Obama compromised and agreed to it. Their entire agenda was to deny Obama any legislative accomplishments at all. Mitch stated this out loud.This forced Obama to resort to governance by Executive Order. And Executive Orders can, of course, be undone by the following executive. So Trump's and McConnell's entire plan during this first, and hopefully last, Trump term has been to UN-DO everything and anything that Obama got accomplished, despite their best efforts to prevent anything getting done.The Republican Party isn't about governing anymore. They're a "post-policy" party whose only goal is to tear down the previous eight years.And apparently, that includes the Obama Recovery from the disastrous Bush Recession. Despite inheriting a growing economy, DJT and his masters have destroyed the recovery and plunged us into the worst economy and unemployment since 1929. MAGA indeed. I have just finished The Imposters by Steve Benen. If you are interested in our country this is a must-read book. Since Trump has been in office, I have read a lot of political books, but this one stands above them all. Over the past few years, I have been aware something was not right with how the Republicans were leading our country. Benen helped me put the dots together so see what is the thesis of his book, the Republicans are in what he calls a “post policy” stance. They no longer want to govern. He gives so many examples of their attempts to make us think they are doing substantive legislation. Then he shows that none of these attempts have any substance or merit. They are just for show. In the book he reports on so many of the stupid things Republicans have said on issues that brought me to an outburst of laughter. As we approach the 2020 election this book is something you will want to read in preparation. The Democrats are going to argue policy ideas, the Republicans are going to throw up piles of irrelevant crap.
